Background of the Study
External donations have increasingly become a crucial source of funding for universities in Nigeria, particularly in public institutions such as Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria. These donations, often from international organizations, philanthropists, and government agencies, help to bridge the funding gap created by insufficient government allocations to the higher education sector (Nwankwo & Akinyemi, 2023). The impact of such donations on university operations, particularly in terms of infrastructure development, research funding, and student support services, has raised questions about their role in the long-term sustainability and academic performance of universities.
Ahmadu Bello University, as one of Nigeria’s premier institutions, has benefited from numerous external donations aimed at improving educational facilities, providing scholarships, and supporting research initiatives. However, the management of these donations remains a subject of concern. While external donations have the potential to significantly enhance university operations, their effectiveness depends on how well they are integrated into the university’s overall strategic plan, how transparent their management is, and whether they align with the institution's long-term goals (Sanni & Adebayo, 2024). Additionally, there is the issue of dependency on external funding, which may lead to challenges in maintaining sustainability when donations fluctuate or cease.
Given the increasing reliance on external donations, understanding their impact on university operations is critical for improving the management of these funds and ensuring that they contribute to the university’s mission of providing quality education and research opportunities. This study will explore the role of external donations at Ahmadu Bello University, assessing their effects on various aspects of the university’s operations, including teaching, research, infrastructure, and student services.
Statement of the Problem While external donations play an important role in supplementing government funding for universities in Nigeria, their impact on university operations is not always fully understood. At Ahmadu Bello University, despite the availability of external funding, there are concerns about the transparency and efficiency with which these funds are utilized. Issues such as inadequate monitoring mechanisms, misallocation of funds, and a lack of coordination between the university’s strategic goals and external donations have been reported. These concerns raise questions about the long-term sustainability of university operations that rely heavily on external donations. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of these donations on university operations and suggest ways to enhance their effectiveness.
